Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
No experience or training is necessary to volunteer in the classroom as a writing, research or art coach. You'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.
This workshop needs your support in Crown Heights. To sign up, contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code and date. We'll supply the address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:

About the program: ​After reading Selina Alko’s The Case for Loving, which recounts the landmark Supreme Court decision invalidating laws prohibiting interracial marriage, fourth-graders explored legal rights that affect their own lives, and discussed issues relevant to their schools and communities. Coaches will help them revise their writing about a human right they consider important, and how it can be protected by the government.
