CulturalDC seeks art-loving volunteers to help us staff our mobile art gallery at Smithsonian's National Zoo at ZooLights. Volunteers assist with staffing the mobile art gallery, answering questions from the public, and guiding visitors through the space. The mobile art gallery is open from 10am-9pm from November 24 - January 1 (except Dec 24, 25, and 31). Volunteers are asked to do 4hr shifts in the space.

About the Exhibition
CulturalDC and the Smithsonian’s National Zoo are pleased to present Adaptation/Migration in the Anthropocene by Maggie Gourlay, opening on Friday, November 24 at ZooLights, powered by Pepco. For the second exhibition in the SPACE4: Mobile Art Gallery, visitors are invited to walk through the fully transformed 40-ft shipping container to see artistic interpretations of invasive insect species that have migrated from around the world to the United States. This multimedia installation explores how these insects adapt to, and thrive in, warmer environments. Gourlay examines the impact humans have had on climate change, and arranges several air purifying plants alongside the invasive species to empower and educate the public on small steps they can take within their home to combat global warming. Visitors are invited to experience multimedia artwork involving these often visually arresting invasive pests, as well as visual and auditory reminders of the symbiotic relationship between people and nature. Viewers are also welcome to use a special edition stamp of one of Gourlay’s "bug portraits" to create original invasive insect prints as a hands-on activity to take home.

Mission Statement

CulturalDC sees the arts as a driving force in building sustainable communities. We provide a wide range of programs and services that support artists' ability to live and work in the city. We give audiences access to affordable and accessible cutting-edge visual and performing art from artists living and working today. For 20 years, CulturalDC’s mission has been to "Make Space for Art." In pursuing our mission, we have brokered over 300,000 square feet of space for artists and arts organizations. We work with real estate developers, artists, city officials, residents and other key stakeholders through creative placemaking initiatives, community-centered engagements, and innovative real estate partnerships that have resulted in the creation of Atlas Performing Arts Center, Source Theatre, Brookland Arts Lofts, and the 27 artist studios at Monroe Street Market in Brookland.

Description

CulturalDC continues to break down barriers to art found in traditional presenting venues with our Mobile Arts Program. We offer the ideal space for nationally and regionally prominent artists to engage with audiences in new, exciting ways. The Mobile Arts offers an artistic dialogue on national, local and grassroots levels. Alongside opportunities for workshops, lectures and community engagement, The Mobile Arts demonstrate the ability of innovative, provoking art to cut across cultural, social and economic boundaries. By offering residents of the nation’s capital direct access to unique creative experiences, CulturalDC is determined to keep high-quality art where it belongs-at the center of community.
