Children with disabilities in Uganda suffer from social exclusion and marginalization right from home and in the societies where they live. Within their households, they are the ones to be considered last among other siblings for any opportunity be education, buying new cloths going out on family tours name them. In the community on the other hand, the situation worsens. they are called rude names, stigmatized, segregated upon on any aspects; in schools their special needs are not catered for, The result is that most children with disabilities dont complete primary level of education due to aforesaid challenges and many others. When they are youths, the dont get employable skills like the non disabled young people. the formal vocational training institutions like other schools also have segregative structures. these children have ended up on city streets to beg for a living and or have turned into objects of pity and remained at home at the mercy of their parents and sibling. This situation can really change and these children can rise above these situations if appropriate interventions can be conducted. AICOD therefore is looking for Advocasy and community mobilisation volunteers to help reverse the trend.

Description

AICOD is a disability and other vulnerable young peoples focused organisation. we are involved in home based rehabilitation services for children with disabilities, Vocational skills training for Youth with disabilities and other vulnerable young people, HIV/AIDS prevention,Care and support, Economic empowerment for vulnerable youths both with/out disabilities. Action for Integrated Community Development is based in Lyantonde district in the Republic of Uganda.

Disability limits access to education and employment, and leads to economic and social exclusion. Poor people with disabilities are caught in a vicious cycle of poverty and disability, each being a cause and a consequence of the other.

Children and youths with disabilities and their families constantly experience barriers to the enjoyment of their basic human rights and to their inclusion in society. Their abilities are overlooked, their capacities are underestimated and their needs are given low priority. Yet, the barriers they face are more frequently as a result of the environment in which they live than as a result of their impairment. Thus the need to provide these people with alternative source of livelihoods.

Productive and decent work is essential for the social and economic integration of individual women and men with disabilities and other young people. A gainful livelihood provides an individual with income, self esteem and a sense of belonging and a chance to contribute to the larger community. AICOD is striving to ensure that both youth and adults with disabilities have access to training and work opportunities in an integrated community to achieve self reliance and independent living.
