ORGANIZATION: Make-A-Wish Metro New York and Western New York

Did you know, a wish is not simply a wish. Independent research has proven that the impact of a wish improves medical outcomes for wish kids bravely frightening against their illnesses? Last year we granted over 700 wishes in Western and Metro NY.

We have a long list of amazing children in the five boroughs waiting for their wishes to be filled and mainly because the children are non verbal.

Wish Granters work to grant the child’s one true wish and are essential to our commitment to bring hope, strength and joy to children battling critical illnesses. A wish is not simply a wish. In the fight against critical illness, wishes spark renewed strength and encouragement for every child and family on their journey.

As a wish granting volunteer, you will be the face of Make A Wish are an integral part of the wish discovery process. You will assist the Wish Granting team in determining the child’s one true wish. Whether it is a visit their favorite theme park, reach out and hug their favorite celebrity, stockpile all their toys they have ever imagined into a waiting limousine, or be a fire fighter for a day.

Description

On April 29, 1980 in Phoenix, a young boy’s wish to be a police officer was granted by the Arizona Department of Public Safety and his dream served as the inspiration for the largest wish-granting organization in the world. He was given a custom-made uniform, helmet and badge and spent the day as a police officer.

The Metro New York chapter, which served the five boroughs of New York City and Nassau County, Long Island, began in 1983 when 7-year-old Steven’s wish to meet Daisy Duke (actress Catherine Bach) of the popular "Dukes of Hazzard" television show came true. The Western New York chapter was founded in 1992, when a young girl wished to meet country music legend, Reba McIntyre at Melody Fair. The Western New York chapter served children in 17 counties in the Buffalo and Rochester area. In September of 2011 the two chapters joined forces, now serving a total of 23 counties in the State of New York.
