Family Services, Inc. is looking for student and adult tutors to help in several programs. Offer direction, support, and academic guidance to an elementary, middle or high school student or adult to build his/her self-confidence and improve his/her school experience.

Tutors are needed at the following programs:

The Landing program at 640 East Diamond Avenue, Suite B in Gaithersburg

  • Students are in high school
  • Subject areas include math (pre-calculus), English and Spanish
  • Mondays from 4:15/4:30-5:30pm
  • Volunteers should be 21 and older

Linkages to Learning program at Rosemont Elementary School, 16400 Alden Avenue in Gaithersburg

  • Students are in 2 nd through 5 th grades
  • Focus on reading, writing and/or math skills
  • Wednesdays from 3:00-4:30pm
  • Students 16 and old are welcome to tutor

Linkages to Learning program at Gaithersburg Middle School, 2 Teachers Way in Gaithersburg

  • Students are in 6 th through 8 th grade
  • Focus on reading and writing skills
  • Wednesdays from 3:15-4:14pm
  • Tutors must be bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Volunteers should be 18 year and older

Regional Youth Services program at 620 East Diamond Avenue, Suite H in Gaithersburg

  • Students are in elementary through high school
  • All subject areas are needed, especially math
  • Mondays-Thursdays from 4:00-7:00pm
  • Tutors are asked to commit to 1-2 one-hour sessions each week
  • Students 15 and old are welcome to tutor with RYS

Early Head Start programat 640 East Diamond Avenue, Suite A in Gaithersburg

  • The student is a current Early Head Start teacher working to complete her degree
  • Basic Statistics support
  • Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 4:00-5:00pm

Key responsibilities include:

  • Attend tutoring sessions as scheduled and on time; notify staff in advance of any absence
  • Provide encouragement and support while assisting the student through the learning process
  • Provide instruction in good study habits
  • Observe confidentiality at all times
  • Keep staff informed about your tutoring experience or any concerns you may have

Qualifications:

  • Sensitive and adaptable to student needs
  • Acceptance of cultural, economic, and familial differences
  • Enthusiasm for working with students
  • No previous teaching or tutoring experience necessary
  • Must have transportation to and from the tutoring site

We ask volunteers for The Landing, Linkages to Learning and the Regional Youth Services programs to commit to tutoring for as much of the school year as possible. Tutors are also needed to help during the summer months.

All FSI regular volunteers who are 18 years and older working with children will need to complete an online background check and submit a notarized Child Protective Services form.
