Come Get a Behind the Scene Look at Making Christmas: How German Immigrants Shaped an American Holiday on Thursday November 16th or Sunday November 19th
Elfreth’s Alley is hosting a new Holiday pop up exhibit, Making Christmas: How German Immigrants Shaped an American Holiday, this year to compliment it’s annual Deck the Alley Holiday event.
Making Christmas: How German Immigrants Shaped an American Holiday will open on November 25th and runs Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4pm each day and select Thursday evenings, 5-8 pm. (November 30th, December 7th, 14th and 21st) through New Year’s Eve Day, December 31st. We would love your help hosting this exhibit.
Beginning in the 1683 when the first German Immigrants landed on the Delaware River at Philadelphia, they brought their customs and folk traditions with them. These traditions - including those surrounding Christmas- found their way into American culture and helped establish Christmas as a National Holiday in 1870. Learn how Santa Claus, The Christmas Tree, cookies and toys all became part of the celebration.
If you are interested in helping at Making Christmas please rsvp to attend an behind the scenes peek at the exhibit and information session on Thursday November 16th from 5:30-7pm or Thursday November 19th from 10-11:30. Light refreshments will be served. We will and go through the topics in the exhibit and also discuss the exhibit logistics and answering your questions. These information sessions will be held at the Elfreth’s Alley Museum at 126 Elfreth’s Alley.
Our annual Deck the Alley takes place on Saturday afternoon, December 2nd, 3pm till 7 pm. This event is one of only two times a year that two dozen private residences are open to the public. This is a ticketed event and more information can be found at www.elfrethsalley.org
