Refugees are permitted to apply for Lawful Permanent Residence 1 year after their entry into the U.S. as a refugee. Catholic Charities provides direct legal services and representation to refugees for this process. The Refugee to Residency Volunteer would assist the program in collecting information and documents needed to complete the application packet. Volunteers would do the following:
- Work with refugee families to obtain necessary information for the application
- Help refugees in the process for obtaining a medical examination from a Civil Surgeon, a requirement for the Green Card process
- Obtain necessary documents
- Work with refugees through the questions on the application.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to listen to interact with refugee families, learn about the Permanent Residence process, and help refugees take the next step towards becoming a U.S. Citizen.
There is no shortage of need in this area and volunteers can help as much as they want. So time commitment can depend on the desire of the volunteer.
