Adult Education

Tutors will assist in an adult education classroom which offers lessons in reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. Mercer Street Friends Center for Career and Workforce Development (CCWD) provides instruction in beginning literacy, advanced ESL, HS diploma equivalency test preparation, digital literacy, and career readiness skills.

A volunteer tutor will provide one-on-one and small group instruction, in whichever content areas he/she feels comfortable, under the guidance and direction of CCWD Instructors.

CCWD is open:

Monday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Tuesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Wednesday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Thursday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mercer Street Friends CCWD currently needs volunteer tutors for all days and times.
The days and times that are most in need of tutors are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday 5 p.m. to 8 p.m..

Duties and Responsibilities

Can include any one or more of the following, depending on volunteer interest.

  1. Provide instruction from CCWD curriculum, which is aligned to College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education.
  2. Instruct lessons on digital literacy and/or career skills, which will enable students' future academic, career, and personal successes.
  3. Assist in creating and organizing curriculum to align with the College Career Readiness Standards.
  4. Individualize instruction to meet the learning accommodations of the student.

Skills, Knowledge, Education and Experience

  • Experience and/or interest in working with a culturally diverse population of adult learners--demonstrating professionalism, cultural sensitivity, and trauma awareness.
  • Working with individuals with varying academic abilities and prior knowledge.
  • Academic and/or professional experience in content area.
  • Prior teaching or tutoring experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
