Volunteer purpose and impact

Meals on Wheels provides nutritious chilled and frozen meals to home-bound adults in need throughout Pima County. This program is integral to ensuring that homebound seniors in our community are able to receive adequate nutrition. Volunteers with Meals on Wheels allow clients to receive the best possible service, receive healthy meals, and most importantly, share a kind and caring connection. This volunteer may be called upon with short notice to substitute for drivers who are out.

Responsibilities and key deliverables

- Assist with loading the van with chilled and frozen meals from the community kitchen

- Assist driver with organizing meals and preparing bags of food to deliver to clients based on specific needs, ensuring food safety practices

- Spend time talking with each client while delivering food

-Substitute when driver is not available.

Qualifications

Volunteer should be able to get into and out of a van frequently, lift bags containing frozen meals, walk to the client's home, and be able to move relatively quickly. Volunteer must be kind, patient, and able to interact calmly and respectfully with vulnerable populations and homebound seniors.

Working Conditions

Volunteer will be working with a Meals on Wheels staff member, traveling to the food bank, sitting in a van, getting into and out of the van to deliver meals, and entering clients’ homes. Volunteer should be comfortable walking, sitting, and standing.

Clearances Required & Training

Fingerprint Clearance Card and TB test is required to interact with clients. Volunteer orientation will be required, and task-specific training will be provided as needed.

Location & Timeframe

7am-3pm, Monday through Thursday. Volunteer will choose how many days per month to participate. Requested commitment of at least 4 months. Program is based out of office at 6303 E Tanque Verde Rd, Tucson AZ 85715.
