Youth Playhouse Build 3

Youth Playhouse Builds

Austin Habitat’s Youth Playhouse Builds were designed to provide youth aged 7-17 with an
opportunity to make a difference in the community. As you may know, in order to volunteer on a
Habitat construction site, volunteers must be at least 16 years old and have a parent or guardian
accompany them due to safety regulations. In order to give youth a one-of-a-kind volunteer
experience, Austin Habitat is holding a Youth Playhouse Build at the ReStore on Saturday, November
18 from 9am - 12pm. The Austin ReStore is located at 500 W Ben White Blvd, Austin, TX 78704.

This special experience doubles as a service-learning opportunity for youth aged 7-17 to cultivate
a new generation of caring, experienced citizens and activists! Together, we will construct and
decorate 2 life- sized children’s playhouses. Youth will learn about Habitat programs and walk away
knowing they did a service for their community. This a special Youth Playhouse Build because the
playhouses will be donated to Helping Hand Home, to benefit children in the foster system. The
playhouses will have a permanent home on their facilities.

As a Youth Playhouse Build volunteer, youth will also participate in a fundraising campaign. But
don’t worry - the fundraising is simple! The Henry W. Bull Foundation has generously given us a
matching grant - for every dollar raised, the Henry W. Bull Foundation will match it up to $2,500!
Our goal is to raise $5,000 by December 31, and all the funds raised will be used to build a real
Habitat home for a family in need. To raise funds, Austin Habitat has drafted a standard letter &
postcard for youth to send to friends and family, highlighting the project and asking them to
donate to this worthy cause. Participants just need to bring their list of addresses to the letter
writing session. Austin Habitat will provide all materials (letter template, envelopes, stamps) and
support.

How to Become a Youth Playhouse Build Participant:

  1. Read the Project Description (above) & FAQs on the next page.
  2. Get permission from your parents to participate and have them sign the liability waiver.
  3. Have your parents email the liability waiver to youthbuild@austinhabitat.org and let us know which letter-writing session you will attend (this is required to participate in the build day).

  4. Bring your list of addresses to one of these sessions and address the pre-written letters (it will take about 30-45 minutes to address the letters):
    • Tuesday, November 14 6 to 7pm
    • Wednesday, November 15 6 to 7pm
  5. Attend the Youth Playhouse Build on Saturday, November 18 at the Austin ReStore to build and decorate the Playhouses!

Please note that this project is open to the first 20 youth volunteers who submit their waiver and
attend a letter-writing session. This opportunity is first-come, first-served.
