Do you want to make a different in your community? Help at-risk youth gain career skills!
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who wish to facilitate a one-time, 1-hour skill-building workshop for our 2019-2020 WAWS scholarship recipients. Potential workshop topics include but are not limited to: transfer planning, interview skills and prep, health insurance literacy, tax literacy, cover letter writing, career planning, portfolio building, LinkedIn, networking, state and federal job application basics, body language, internship/job search, mental health and self-care tips, and more.
Access to higher education is a considerable barrier for many low-income, underserved, and under-represented students. Recognizing this, Words Alive established the Words Alive Westreich Scholarship (WAWS) program to help alleviate some of the high-cost burden associated with continuing education.
Applicants of WAWS are prior participants of the Words Alive Adolescent Book Group (ABG) program pursuing higher education. The ABG program supports approximately 250 at-risk youth each month within the San Diego county Juvenile Court and Community Schools system. Many of our students have experienced incredible hardships including homelessness, familial violence, and teen pregnancy but with the help of ABG are now on a path to success. Through the ABG program, these students find a love of reading and identify goals for success that often involves the pursuit of higher education.
In addition to receiving a financial stipend, WAWS scholarship winners are paired with a Words Alive mentor and offered the opportunity to attend skill-building workshops throughout the year including resume building, interview skills, and financial literacy.
Goals and outcomes:
Facilitators will provide a 1-hour workshop designed to provide general awareness, instruction, relevant documents, examples, and hands-on practice for a life and/or career enhancing skill.
Ideal Facilitators Should:
- Be comfortable working with youth
- Be culturally sensitive to the diverse backgrounds of our students
- Have reliable transportation
- Have a positive attitude
Hours and location:
Facilitators will present a one-time, 1-hour workshop to youth mentees and their mentors. Workshops will take place virtually until further notice.
If you are interested in this program or know of someone that may be interested, please contact Robyn Grand at robyn@wordsalive.org at your earliest convenience.
