ORGANIZATION: POETRY SLAM INC

  • 5 people are interested

Poetry Slam, Inc. is undergoing an organizational restructure.

Presently, our Executive Council serves as our Board of Directors. The Executive Council is a 7-member body elected by Slammasters (organizers of local poetry slams). While this model was effective when the organization was founded, it no longer serves our needs. The Executive Council will continue to exist to oversee matters related to slams and the slam community, while the new Board of Directors will serve as a more traditional non-profit board, overseeing the organization's professional needs.

As our first Board of Directors, this is an exciting opportunity to create something new and to shape the future of the organization!

About POETRY SLAM INC

Mission Statement

The mission of Poetry Slam, Inc. (PSi) is to promote the creation and performance of poetry that engages communities and provides a platform for voices to be heard beyond social, cultural, political, and economic barriers.

Description

Poetry Slam, Inc. was officially founded as a 501(c)3 in 1997. While our primary programs are the National Poetry Slam, the Women of the World Poetry Slam, and the Individual World Poetry Slam, Poetry Slam, Inc. is also the official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization charged with overseeing the international coalition of poetry slams. There are over 100 certified poetry slams, actively hosting events year round throughout North America. Though slams are maintained in a growing number of cities by local organizers, they are certified by PSi as a commitment to the community of slams that adhere to the vision slam’s founders established for the art form. Because of slam’s exponential growth as an art form, PSi has emerged not only as an administrative body to maintain the rules which govern slam, but as an organization that seeks to grow slam’s audience and protect slam’s interests with the support of our membership body.
