Mid-Continent Oceanographic Institute (MOI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students, ages 6-18, with their writing skills and homework, emphasizing cross-curricular creativity.
For the Young Authors' Book Project, MOI staff and volunteers go into John A. Johnson Elementary School in East St. Paul twice a week through the school year to work with a group of fifth graders on developing a portfolio of writing samples around a theme. Towards the end of the year, volunteers help students choose a piece of work to edit or revise and be published in an anthology released in May. Volunteers will get the chance to work with students on brainstorming topics, writing skills, revision, and finding their voice.
