The Community College Mentoring Program matches Asian Pacific American community college students with coaches who provide students with personal, academic, and career guidance necessary for students to make informed decisions about successfully navigating their career paths.
Coaches model positive behavior and partner with students in their own professional development by empowering and enabling their students in meeting their goals. Additionally, coaches support their student in accessing campus or professional resources and enhance their student’s belief in reaching their own potential.
What are the Commitment Requirements?
Coaches must be ready to commit to one-on-one mentorships with students for a full academic year. Additional requirements include:
- Contacting students through phone, in-person, or video chat at least once a month throughout the academic year.
- Meeting at least once in person per semester with students, not including the match meeting.
- Supporting the students in achieving their 3 SMART goals (1 academic, 1 professional, and
- 1 personal) each semester.
- Communicating regularly with AALEAD staff and submitting a coach log on a monthly basis.
What are the Qualifications to be a Coach?
AALEAD recruits applicants over the age of 21 with at least 3 years of full-time professional experience. Competitive applicants offer academic, personal, and professional support and opportunities to students.
How are Coaches prepared and trained?
Coaches are required to attend a one and a half hour in-person training session prior to their matching. Attending a pre-match training does not guarantee a match. Additional training opportunities and resources will be offered throughout the duration of a coach’s formal involvement in the Community College Mentoring Program.
What is the Matching Process?
Coach and student matches are based on student goals, areas of interest, and career aspirations. AALEAD’s Community College Program Coordinator takes the time necessary to get to know both students and coaches prior to the match.
What is the Application Process?
Applicants must submit a submit an application and resume through our online application portal: https://aalead.wufoo.com/forms/m16ul6t513vsehy/
