Volunteers are needed to facilitate writing workshops with teens at the Oakland Public Library. For over twenty years, The Beat Within has been running writing workshops in juvenile halls and publishing the youth's writing. Partnering with Oakland Public Library, The Beat Within is now offering writing workshops in the community. These workshops bring young people with different experiences together and provide opportunities for youth in the justice system to become familiar with the services and safe spaces of the public library.

No experience with writing workshops is necessary, although volunteers should have some experience working with youth. A genuine desire to understand and develop the youths' own critical thinking is needed. Volunteers will be required to attend an orientation session. Support from experienced library staff will also be available. The time commitment is two hours per month (1:45-3:45 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month), plus typing and editing in your own time.

To apply, please click "I want to Help!" above and complete the application that arrives in your email inbox.

Mission Statement

Your Oakland Public Library empowers all people to explore, connect, and grow.

Description

The Oakland Public Library is a part of the City of Oakland and has been in existence since 1878. Our locations currently include 16 branches, a Main Library, 6 Teen Zones, the Second Start Adult Literacy Program, a Tool Lending Library and the African American Museum and Library. We also operate the Books for Wider Horizons program that recruits, trains, and places volunteer story readers in preschool or childcare centers throughout the City of Oakland and offer many other special services for residents of Oakland and California.

We are supported by a lively Friends of the Library group and by the Library Advisory Commission, as well as by local Friends' groups around the city.
