In-school tutoring and mentoring is the largest and longest running program at Inspiring Minds. Our Tutor/Mentor network work as in-school support for students 1:1 and in small groups (up to 4) to empower students PreK-5th grade for academic success through cultivation of caring and trusting relationships.

Tutors/Mentors are committed to working in a school for a minimum of one hour per week. Every week, volunteers are expected to work with their students academically for 50 minutes, covering course material or helping with homework-related topics, and engaging with students socially for 10 minutes to develop meaningful relationships each hour.

Volunteers are required to:

  • Complete an application to serve with Inspiring Minds
  • Obtain a state background check (BCI)
  • Attend a two-hour orientation

About Inspiring Minds

Location:

65 Pavilion Avenue, Providence, RI 02905, US

Mission Statement

Inspiring Minds empowers students to succeed and thrive in school and life by developing trusted relationships with community members who are knowledgeable of the culturally responsive, academic, and socio-emotional needs necessary for student success.

Description

Inspiring Minds is an antiracist organization committed to closing equity gaps based on race, ethnicity, first language, and economic status that impact RI students and families. The organization was founded as Lippitt Hill Tutorial in1963 to provide academic support for children in two segregated elementary schools. Since then, the organization has grown into a citywide service and, in 1988, became Volunteers in Providence Schools to reflect its citywide approach to addressing academic inequities. Finally, the name Inspiring Minds was adopted in 2008 as the programs and scope of work expanded beyond Providence City's borders. Join us as we aim for programming in schools across the state!
