Hope is in the bag!
The vision of a food truck outreach is to focus on distributing produce to residents in urban
neighborhoods, which often lack grocery stores that carry a variety of produce, as well as
rural areas that do not have adequate hunger relief resources. The Mahoning Valley Dream
Center (MVDC) food truck will go where the need is greatest, with some of our first target
distribution sites being at or near elementary schools. Individuals and families will have the
opportunity to pick up groceries at the same time they meet their children after school. Our
goal is to also place ourselves in neighborhoods where there is a lack of public
transportation for families to get to grocery stores and where there is a lack of healthy food
choices. Because of our partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank and the MVDC as the
distribution agent, we have the opportunity to distribute fresh produce as often as three
days a week. Many of the families we serve say that the simple gift of a bag of groceries
was just enough food to get them through the month. Or they saved just enough on their
grocery costs that they were able to pay rent or keep the lights on. In this way, we hope
not only address the issue of hunger, but also keep fragile families and children from sliding
into starvation and homelessness.
How To Help
We are at our best when we serve others!
Recent investigations by Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership (TNP), have found gaps in food
access on the southeast and southwest sides of Warren Ohio. Our first distribution was
launched in May 2017 on the southeast side, directly behind Willard School in the Trumbull
Homes community. The MVDC is hopeful that our Food Truck Outreach will help alleviate the
food hunger issues in our communities. We are so humbled to be able to serve and provide
hope to our communities in this capacity. And look forward to serving alongside you!
