Volunteer Purpose and Impact

Refugees arrive to Phoenix with little knowledge of life in the United States or how to navigate their community. Many refugees have never had a bank account, taken a light rail train, purchased a bus pass, or visited a public library. Phoenix has many resources available to newly arrived refugees but they need to know how to access those resources. Refugees receive orientation classes when they first arrive, but need occasional hands-on help adapting to unfamiliar aspects of American life.

Lutheran Social Services Refugee Program is seeking volunteers who would be willing to help a refugee who is new to the U.S. navigate their community. Hours and schedule would be on an as-needed basis, with volunteers on call for different hours.

Duties and Responsibilities

Activities with refugees may include:

  • teaching how to use public transportation,
  • going to the MVD to get a first state ID or permit to drive,
  • going to the public library to sign up for a library card and see what resources are available,
  • opening a first bank account,
  • shopping for basic necessities,
  • exploring neighborhood parks,
  • other events that introduce them to community resources and empower them to support themselves.

Staff would prefer these outings to take place during office hours (8am to 4:30pm) but could occasionally take place on evenings or weekends depending on the refugee individual/family’s availability, the experience of the volunteer and the purpose of the expedition.

Qualifications

Volunteers must be patient, flexible, and able to operate with little guidance. Should be knowledgeable about the Phoenix community and resources available to community members. Ability to speak another language is helpful but not required.

Working Conditions

Volunteer schedule is very flexible. Interpreters are not guaranteed, volunteer should be comfortable communicating with beginner or non-English speakers. An excursion may take 2-6 hours.

Clearances Required and Training

Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card Required. Central Registry Background Check required. Staff can provide some training on how to help refugees set up bank account, get state ID, etc., as necessary.

Location and Timeframe

Minimum 3 month commitment

Schedule: On call. The volunteer will let LSS-SW staff know the days and times they are available. Volunteer will be contacted in advance when a refugee needs help during volunteer’s available time.

If you are interested in this role please fill out our online application so that a staff member can give you a call with more details, answer any questions you have, and make sure it is a good fit for you or your group: http://bttr.im/vhj24
