Become a Mentor!

Join the StreetCode Academy team!

During the Fall, StreetCode Academy runs an informal office hours program for the Hack (computer literacy/coding) part of StreetCode where students can drop in to work on projects and get help from mentors.

Offices hours run Monday and Wednesday from 6-9pm at East Palo Alto Academy.

  • Who comes to office hours?
    • Our students are ages 7 - 77 with varying skill levels. There will be some people who have never coded before in the same room as others who are not too far from being ready for software internships.
  • How do we run office hours?
    • Office hours are unstructured work time for our students. Mentors will be paired with students based on the mentor's area of expertise and the student's level of skill. Mentors work either one on one or in small groups.
  • What is your role as a mentor?
    • In these small settings, mentors could end up working with a ride range of different students with very varying interests. There isn't a lot of structure as to how to approach these interactions other than seeing what the students are interested in, then trying to help them take a step towards their goals, whether that looks like showing them how HTML works, helping them design out a prototype of an app they want to make, introducing them to tools to help them learn to code, or helping them prepare for interviews.
