WCAP (Waukesha Community Arts Project) is looking for additional after school mentors for our programs. Ideally, we are looking for high school or college students who are able to commit to volunteering at least 1 day/ week during the school year between the hours of 3pm-5pm Monday- Friday (start time is flexible if necessary based on volunteer's school schedule).

Our class schedule is:
Monday- Creative Writing
Tuesday/ Wednesday- Visual Arts (specific topic changes every 8 weeks or so)
Thursday- Drama
Friday- Dance

The main role of the mentor/ volunteer is to work with small groups of our middle school students to build relationships with the students and keep them engaged in the projects. Our programs try to focus on community and providing a safe environment for young teens to make connections and build friendships through art and creativity. Volunteers/ mentors are expected to be engaged in the activity as well and consistently set a good example for our students.

The mentors/ volunteers do not need to have experience/ skills in the arts! We simply ask that you are willing to set a positive example of *trying* any project we are working on. This is a safe and positive judgement free environment!

The volunteer/ mentor may be asked to do other simple tasks such as assist with prep or clean up from class, doing dishes to help clean up snacks, lead or participate in group welcome games/ ice breakers at the start of class, etc.

Volunteers/ Mentors are also welcome to join our Leadership Through the Arts program-- a club for our volunteers that focuses on building and improving leadership skills that can be used to be a better mentor and leader in our programs. One way that this group studies leadership is through planning one 2 hour workshop/ month for our students on a topic of their choosing. This club also discusses topics such as career and college prep.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Waukesha Community Arts Project is to help adolescents reach their own potential by developing self-expression, creativity, problem-solving skills, leadership skills and community involvement through quality after-school art experiences.

Description

Waukesha Community Arts Project is a nonprofit organization offering free afterschool programs to middle school and high school students. We opened our doors ten years ago teaching visual arts to middle school students two days a week. Since then, we have expanded our reach to provide classes Monday through Friday for our middle schoolers in creative writing, visual arts, drama, and dance. We also offer opportunities for high school students including our Leadership Through the Arts Program.

WCAP strives to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment for our students to develop not only artistic skills and creative expression but also social skills, self awareness, confidence, and life long friendships to overcome one of life’s most challenging stages-adolescence.

Many students, parents, school counselors, and community members have witnessed the enormous benefits of having free after school art instruction with such strong community links-a unique aspect of WCAP. We provide ways for students from all walks of life to create their own voice, envision their potential, and imagine the opportunities available to them.
