Project Read Adult Literacy Training: Be a Hero and open the door to reading for an Adult

Project Read tutor and student

Make a difference in a person's life. Teach an adult to read. Project Read volunteers attend three engaging training workshops and are well-prepared before being paired with an adult literacy student. The 10-hour training is held at the San Mateo MAIN Library, 55 West 3rd Avenue. Preregistration is required.

Interested? Signup at www.cityofsanmateo.org/volunteer. Fill out the online Library Volunteer Application and in the assignment section CHOOSE Project Read Adult Tutor from the pull down menu. For more information on volunteering for Project Read, call 650.522.7848. Join our team as a volunteer adult literacy tutor. Volunteers are patient, flexible and want to make a difference in their community. Tutors work one-on-one with adult learners, improving basic reading and writing skills and supporting learners in achieving their learning goals.

Volunteer tutors must:
-- Have a high school diploma or GED
-- Complete tutor orientation and training
-- Commit to at least six months of volunteering
-- Be available to tutor twice a week for one or two hour sessions
-- Stay connected with Project Read by participating in phone calls and planning meetings
