Through the innovative SnowSchool program local elementary schools students (3rd - 6th grade) travel by bus with their classroom teachers to Bogus Basin where they are met by a team of community volunteers and university interns. With snowshoes on their feet, staff, interns, and volunteers lead students out to explore the winter landscape.

Along the way students engage in hands-on activities to help them learn about snow pack, the water cycle, winter ecology, and animal adaptations. These educational activities are designed to complement classroom science curriculum and state education standards. Through SnowSchool students not only learn about the outdoors, they learn how to experience the outdoors. As the program has grown we have remained committed to reaching out to underprivileged populations of youth who would not otherwise have these opportunities, and therefore can benefit the most from these outdoor experiences.

SnowSchool days runs from 8:45am to about 3pm Monday through Friday from January through March. We ask that volunteers commit to 3 days of service throughout the season. This will allow you to view the program in action, understand the timing and pace, and become familiar with material and trails. This way you'll be confident in leading a group and really get a chance to interact with the students.
