Volunteering Can Make a Difference in a Child's Life

United Way California Capital Region in affiliation with the AARP Foundation is proud to bring Experience Corps to our region. Experience Corps is a proven program made up of volunteers who are dedicated to helping children become great readers before completing third grade. Working collaboratively with teachers and other volunteers, you can change the course of a child's life by sharing your wisdom and experience. Our goal is to improve children's literacy, strengthen our communities, and help develop cultures of inspiration in our schools and support our hardworking teachers.

Experience Corps is an intergenerational volunteer-based tutoring program that is proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become great readers by the end of third grade. We inspire and empower adults 50 and older to serve in local schools and disrupt the cycle of poverty by making a lasting difference in the lives of Kindergarten-3rd grade students. With approximately 2 days per week, 2-3 hours per day, you can make an impact on a child’s life. By helping young students become better readers, we seek to ensure a legacy of strong futures, supported schools, and empowered volunteers.

Description

United Way California Capital Region has launched the Square One Project, a 20-year promise to significantly increase the number of local students who graduate from high school ready for success in college and beyond. Through nine decades of work and research across Amador, El Dorado, Sacramento, Placer and Yolo counties, the local United Way believes ending poverty starts in school and is working to ensure kids meet important milestones for success in college or career. Sacramento area kids who graduate from college are 62% less likely to live in poverty than those who drop out of high school. Through the Square One Project, we are working to keep kids in school, keep them on track, set high expectations and ensure they have strong support systems.
