Organization Profile:

Founded in 1999, BUILD uses entrepreneurship-based, experiential learning to ignite the potential of youth in under-resourced communities and equip them for high school, college and career success. BUILD’s unique program offers students a four year entrepreneurship experience designed to reinforce the Common Core, develop 21st Century Skills and motivate student engagement in school. Starting in 9th grade, BUILD students work with their peers and community mentors to develop business ideas, pitch to funders and launch real businesses. As they journey through high school, BUILD provides students with support in navigating the college application process and the opportunity to explore college and career options, while expanding their businesses or opting into community internships.

BUILD currently serves over 2,000 high school students at programs located in the San Francisco Bay Area; Washington, DC; and Boston, MA and New York City. Over the next ten years, BUILD will strategically expand its operations to ensure that more students graduate from high school prepared for future success each year.

Position Summary:

BUILD is looking for an organized, creative self-starter who is passionate about social media, communications and BUILD’s mission. This is a volunteer (unpaid) position. This position will receive hands-on mentoring and training and will provide support to the communications and development teams.

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in marketing or communications) or recent graduate
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to organize work, prioritize, meet deadlines, and follow up with minimal direction
  • Digital and Social Media savvy - thorough knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn
  • Proficiency in GoogleDocs and MS Office
  • Experience with WordPress, MailChimp, Adobe Creative Suite and Social Media Automation Tools (such as Hootsuite) a plus
  • Proactive, seeking out solutions to problems before they arise, without delay
  • Positive attitude with a passion for learning, working hard and having fun

Responsibilities:

  • Schedule and create relevant, original, high-quality social media content
  • Research and report on social media best practices; provide suggestions and strategies for growing social following and boosting engagement
  • Find and share articles, stories, etc. that are relevant to our mission and supporters
  • Utilize relevant tools to analyze social media and website performance.
  • Provide website support (experience with WordPress a plus).
  • Assist with other special projects and events as needed

Commitment:

The ideal candidate would be available six to eight hours a week for 3-4 months, with an ideal start date of December 1 or January 1. The hours can be divided over one to three days per week. Please indicate your availability in the cover letter. This is a volunteer (unpaid) position. College credit may be available depending on the requirements of your college or university.

Description

BUILD is supporting six LAUSD schools with the delivery of our business and entrepreneurship curriculum. Throughout the school year students will learn design thinking, form business teams, and develop an advanced prototype of a product to sell! BUILD recruiting volunteer business team mentors to support students as they form their business teams. Business team mentors are professional mentors who support and motivate a youth business team, provide recommendations for a company's vision, growth, and goals for the year, and build strong relationships with students. The volunteer commitment entails attending attend 10 class sessions throughout the second semester of the school year, 2 in person, 8 virtually.
