Relay For Life

What is Relay For Life? In May 1985, Dr. Gordon "Gordy" Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, raising money to help the American Cancer Society with the nation's biggest health concern: cancer. Relay For Life has since evolved into community events around the world where teams and participants gather together to walk for 24 hours, raising funds and awareness for cancer. Relay For Life remains the signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life of Scotts Valley is entering its 9th year and needs support from the community! Relay For Life of North Santa Cruz County 2019 will be taking place June 1st and 2nd at Sky Park in Scotts Valley. Our Event Leadership Team (ELT) is looking for folks to help us plan the event. The commitment can be as much or as little time as you can fit into your schedule. There are many leadership positions open including: - Social Media: managing and implementing Social Media strategies for Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter - Marketing: working with ACS staff to effectively market the event to the community - Entertainment: booking and scheduling bands, performances from community groups, etc. - Team Coach: helping participants and teams feel supported and recognized through resources provided by the American Cancer Society - Sponsorship & Fundraising: great for people comfortable in sales - engaging businesses in the community requesting sponsorship while working with ACS staff to conceptualize unique fundraising opportunities

Mission Statement

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Description

Relay For Life is a fun-filled event designed to celebrate cancer survivors and raise money to help the American Cancer Society save lives, help those who have been touched by cancer, and empower individuals to fight back against the disease.

During the Relay for Life, 10-20 people come together to form a team. The teams come from local businesses, churches, MOMs clubs, youth groups, etc and take turns walking/running laps around a high school track. The entrance fee per team is ONLY $150 and then each person fundraises at their own pace. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times for a total of 24-hours.

WHY 24 HOURS??!

It iss crazy, but WonderfuL! The reason its 24 hours long is because cancer patients endure pain 24 hours a day and we can all give up 24 hours to celebrate them, their lives and the strides in finding a cure!! Cancer never sleeps.

There are Relay for Life events throughout CAlifornia, So go to www.relayforlife.org and find the one nearest YOU!! OH, don't forget to invite your favorite cancer survivors... we want to honor and pamper them at our events!
