About

The Extension Master Food Volunteer will assist North Carolina Cooperative Extension Family & Consumer Science (FCS) Agent in providing support for food-related programming. The EMFV will complete 30 hours of required core training in the following areas: basic nutrition, cooking techniques and demonstrations, food systems, local food, diversity and inclusion, food safety, and teaching strategies. Volunteers will then be required to complete 20 hours of shadowing and assisting the agent during their first year in the program. With agent approval, they will be able to work on their own in the community to provide proposed programs.

Responsibilities:

Educating the community:

  1. Provide research-based information from Extension land-grant universities to citizens.

  2. Partner with community organizations, communities of faith and corporations to increase knowledge of food systems, nutrition, cooking skills and food safety.

Providing community outreach:

  1. Share research-based information on nutrition, food systems and food safety to citizens

  2. Provide food tastings and cooking demonstrations.

  3. Manage food donations for citizens in need.

Building capacity:
  1. Promote the EMFV program and events.

  2. Join efforts with local organizations to advocate for rights to food security, address issues of hunger and education regarding food.

  3. Participate in continuing education opportunities provided by Cooperative Extension and beyond to increase and maintain knowledge.
Other:
  1. Serve as a team member with NC Cooperative Extension staff.

  2. Maintain appropriate records (i.e. volunteer service hours).

Description

The Mecklenburg County Extension Services, a division of Mecklenburg Parks and Recreation, provides educational programming and support in the following focus areas:

  • 4-H Youth Development - provides youth development via school enrichment, afterschool, clubs, and summer programs.
  • Horticulture - provides technical support for lawn and garden concerns via the extension agent and the Extension Master Gardners' volunteer program
  • Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) - assists limited resource audiences in acquiring the knowledge and changed behavior necessary for nutritionally sounds diets, and to contribute to the improvement of the total family diet and nutritional well-being
  • Family and Consumer Sciences - provides science-based education in the areas of local foods, food safety and home food preservation via workshops and trainings.
