The All Ways Up Foundation is sponsoring a multi-site VISTA project that focuses on college access and success for low-income youth. The project includes seven sites and we are looking for a Leader to coordinate and oversee the project. To be considered, the applicant MUST HAVE SERVED WITH AMERICORPS OR THE PEACE CORPS FOR AT LEAST ONE YEAR.

The mission of the ALL WAYS UP Foundation (AWU) is to help first-generation and low-income youth get into AND through college. By providing scholarships, support for other non-profit organizations and an annual leadership summit, we are working to bridge the gap between ambition and opportunity to break the generational cycle of poverty. The goals of the multi-site project are to increase 1) the number of low-income youth of color who go to and graduate from college and 2) the number of graduates who are financially literate and have the skills required to pursue meaningful employment and/or a career and expects to benefit over 1,100 additional low-income youth by the end of the three-year project. The project is currently beginning year two of a three-year term. A total of eleven VISTA members are serving at seven different sites and their work is focusing on activities that include resource development, program expansion, communications, volunteer generation and program development. The VISTA Leader will assist the ALL WAYS UP Foundation in achieving the objectives and enhancing project activities and sources of community support. The Leader will maintain and/or improve monitoring, reporting and project management systems and will train each of the Sub-Site supervisors in the use of the systems. In addition, the Leader will support each VISTA member in his/her work, and will monitor member monthly reports, including conducting one-on-one monthly meetings with each member. The Leader will facilitate information sharing and peer learning, increasing the capacity of VISTAs to complete their work plans successfully.

The Leader will 1) help recruit, screen and train incoming VISTAs, 2) assist AWU in updating the training for the Sub-Site Supervisors, and 3) engage the community through the Alumni Advisory Board. Ongoing activities include: 1) coordinate VISTAs and improve monitoring, reporting, and project management systems, 2) provide opportunities for VISTAs to network and develop professional skills through monthly VISTA training days, 3) assist VISTAs in accessing other avenues for staff development and training, 4) coordinate service learning projects in celebration of designated National Days of Service, 5) train VISTA members on their respective organization's reporting requirements and assist with reporting needs, 6) process other VISTA paperwork as necessary, 7) convene periodic meetings of the Alumni Advisory Board, 8) enhance VISTA Project visibility, and 9) highlight VISTAs’ achievements. In addition, the Leader will work to enhance the stability and sustainability of the Project.

Mission Statement

ALL WAYS UP helps first-generation and low-income youth get to AND through college. By providing scholarships, support for other non-profit organizations and an annual leadership summit, we are working to bridge the gap between ambition and opportunity to break the generational cycle of poverty.

Description

ALL WAYS UP started by offering a scholarship to any high school graduate who lived in Section 8 housing and enrolled in a two- or four-year college or university. These students were given scholarships of up to $2,500 a year to ease the financial burden of college. After seeing the impact of this initial effort, ALL WAYS UP soon began to offer Section 8 residents other services, including summer camp scholarships for children and home ownership down payment grants for couples and families saving every spare penny to buy their first home.

As ALL WAYS UP began to evolve, it discovered another way to create positive change:

To partner with community-based, non-profit organizations that were running programs for low-income, hard-working, motivated participants.

In 2012, ALL WAYS UP broadened its charity partner outreach by launching the Bridging the Gap Awards (BGA), a grant that assisted smaller-sized non-profits working hard to help low-income residents all around the country. Through partnerships with these grass-roots charities, ALL WAYS UP has expanded its giving programs to include college scholarships and an annual UP Through Education Summit for students entering their first year of college. To date, through the BGAs and other initiatives, ALL WAYS UP has funded more than 40 community partners and approximately 200 education scholarships.
