The Austin Optimist Club is a civic organization which has been dedicated to serving the youth of Greater Austin since 1935! Each year they raise money for youth charities at their Christmas Tree Lot and they could use some more friendly faces to help them! Volunteers do not need to Optimist Club members, but should enjoy working with the public. Job responsibilities include assisting customers with locating trees, picking up strings from the ground and policing the grounds and street areas and greeting customers. Able bodied volunteers are needed to assist with bringing trees to vehicles and tying trees to vehicles, stocking trees and operating a 16" bar electric chain saw. Volunteers will be placed according to their abilities and willingness to perform manual labor. Volunteers shifts are four hours long and begin on November 24. The schedule is as follows: Monday through Friday shifts are available from 1-5 PM and from 5-9 PM and Saturday and Sunday shifts are available from 9 AM to 1 PM, 1-5 PM and 5-9 PM. The last day volunteers are needed is Wednesday December 6. The lot is located on the corner of San Gabriel and North Lamar in Austin. Come help the youth of Austin and spread some holiday cheer with this fun seasonal volunteer opportunity!

Description
One of our core programs, RSVP is part of the federal AmeriCorps Seniors program and was founded locally in 1972. Last year more than 17,100 Americans of all ages and backgrounds united to meet local needs, strengthen communities, and expand opportunity through national service in Texas. AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers served at more than 2,400 locations across Texas, including schools, food banks, homeless shelters, health clinics, youth centers, veterans facilities, and other nonprofit and faith-based organizations.
Those who benefit from the work performed by engAGE Travis County and RSVP volunteers include the full spectrum of people from birth to old age, including homeless or isolated people with acute, chronic or terminal illnesses; frail homebound seniors; low-income families; teen mothers; disaster victims; at-risk youth; veterans; people with physical, mental or learning disabilities; and seniors in nutrition programs.
Help your community by offering your unique skills and talents. We’ll recommend ongoing and short-term volunteer opportunities based on your skills and interests, but the choice of where you volunteer and what you do is entirely yours. The benefits of being a volunteer (aged 50 and over) are numerous: travel reimbursement, on-duty accident and liability insurance, life-long learning opportunities, social engagement, recognition, and greetings throughout the year.
