Do you like to meet new people and make a real difference in the world? Are you flexible and interested in a variety of things?
Metro North ABE is looking for volunteers to help in our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes in Brooklyn Center. Your role would vary from floating around the classroom, leading a small group activity such a reading a story and answering questions or playing a game, to working one on one with students. You may have the opportunity to help on the computer with things like email, typing and finding websites. There could even be occasional prep work such as cutting things out for the teacher.
The classroom teacher will be there to give you clear instructions for whatever needs to be done that day.
Volunteers are needed on Tuesdays or Thursdays with shifts are available between 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM.
No additional volunteer opportunities at this time.

Metro North will inspire and challenge all learners to reach their full potential. In a safe and supportive environment, we will teach the skills needed to succeed as responsible citizens in our changing world.
Metro North Adult Basic Education is a well established program, known as a collaborative partner sharing resources and working to find new and innovative ways to meet the needs of our learners. We have been serving a diverse population of adult learners in the north metro communities of the Twin Cities, (Minneapolis and St Paul) for more than 30 years. Metro North ABE is one of the largest consortiums in the state and recognized as a leader in best practices in adult basic education.
We are comprised of 8 school districts, providing free classes to adults for learning English, basics in reading, writing and math skills, citizenship, preparation for college placement, GED preparation, diploma, basic computer skills, transitions to post-secondary, and work place readiness. Last year we provided services to over 2000 learners. About half are learning English in our ESL program, and the other half are in basic skills development, GED, and other classes.
Metro North's diversity is not only in its adult learners, its sites are unique in offering urban, suburban, rural and small town settings. Covering the northern part of the Twin Cities, the consortium includes these school districts: Anoka-Hennepin, Brooklyn Center, Centennial, Columbia Heights, Elk River, Fridley, Spring Lake Park and St. Francis.
