Read to Animals

Volunteers bring in kid-friendly animals for students to read to during the CAN After School Program reading rotation (sometime between 4-6pm, Mon-Thurs - specific time and day depend on each CAN location).

The purpose of this position is for students practice social-emotional skills, how to interact with animals, and build confidence reading aloud in a stress-free space around the animals.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, complete a volunteer application, background check, and the "Read to Succeed Volunteer" online training on CAN Academy. Experience with children and youth is preferred, but all interests and educational backgrounds are welcome.

Animal Guidelines:

-Good with kids (doesn’t bite, bark when excited, very calm, etc.)

-Easy to transport to the community center

-Under 100 lbs.

-Potty trained or volunteer must have a bathroom plan (please provide poop bags)

-Rabies vaccinated (owners must send veterinarian records)

-On a leash, even when inside

-Please no turtles or fish (or animals that live in a tank that has water). Volunteers may bring a water dish or a pet bed.

Animals that will stay in a cage do not need to be vetted, but any free-roaming animals need to meet Rachel first before they are brought into the community centers.

CAN advocates for low-income families with schools, community service providers, and government agencies. CAN develops awareness in the broader community of the challenges these families face. Description

Community Action Network (CAN) is a non-profit community based human services organization that serves residents in low-income public housing sites in Ann Arbor. CAN seeks to promote improved academic success, improved life and coping skills, psychosocial and developmental support, and enhanced quality of life for the children and families it serves. CAN offers numerous programs on site, including personal enrichment activities, individual counseling and support groups; Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts; and a comprehensive summer camp program. Academically-oriented programs, such as individual home work help and small group tutoring, is also offered by college students who coordinate their efforts with the children's teachers. Additionally, CAN provides access to a wide spectrum of social services, such as food distributions from Food Gatherers and public health education from Planned Parenthood. CAN also assists residents in mobilizing other available community resources by making referrals to such programs as Head Start, Sister to Sister, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Finally, CAN organizes several on-site community events during the course of the year, including potlucks, picnics, and talent shows.
