Gardening on the Richmond Greenway: celebrating MLK Jr Day of Service
Come join us as we do winter planting of native plants along the top of our bioswale. We’ll be mulching and tending our rain garden and bioswale as we transform the old Santa Fe Railroad line into a vibrant city bike/pedestrian park. We’ll be planting and tending plants enjoying our winter rainy season, having a fun day out in nature. Come learn about our green infrastructure which filters storm water runoff, and enjoy seeing many exciting projects on the Greenway. Registration is from 8:30 to 9:00am at our site, followed by our community service project. We'll provide tools, gloves, and snacks. At noon, there will be the grand opening of Unity Park on the Greenway, lunch for volunteers, and entertainment. It'll be a party!
We are gradually transforming a gritty urban space into beautiful natural gardens to encourage families to get outdoors and to provide native habitat gardens for wildlife, especially birds and pollinators.
The Watershed Project was inspired to transform a neglected urban space, to make an inviting park for our local community, while encouraging students and community volunteers to help and learn from the many projects involved. The Greenway provides an outdoor classroom for students, families, and community volunteers, and a place to enjoy nature in the city.
