ORGANIZATION: Behind the Book

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.

No experience or training is necessary to volunteer as a writing, research or art coach. You'll support, engage, and encourage students as they work on their projects in the classroom.

This workshop needs your support at an elementary school in Harlem, NYC. To sign up, contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code. We'll supply the school address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:

PROGRAM 1253SV-M

Date: Monday, November 20th, 2017
Time: 10:30 AM - Noon
Volunteer Role: Research Coach

About the workshop: This third-grade class read Susan Verde’s The Water Princess, about a girl in Burkina Faso who must walk a long way to bring water to her family. Students will learn about why it’s difficult for her village to get water, and how to conserve it here. They'll record their own water use for a day and compare it to the amount the main character’s family uses, then do research about how water is collected and prepared for use, which includes a trip to the Central Park Reservoir. In addition to writing about their findings, students will create a mural at their school to instruct other students about water conservation. They’ll also make and sell greeting cards, with proceeds going to the Georgie Badiel Foundation, which is committed to bringing clean drinking water to the people of Burkina Faso.
