Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
No experience or training is necessary to volunteer as a writing, research or art coach. You'll support, engage, and encourage students as they work on their projects in the classroom.

PROGRAM 3755LCR-S
Date: Monday, November 13th, 2017
Time: 10:00 - 11:30 AM
Volunteer Role: Writing Coach
About the workshop: This fifth-grade class read Lesa Cline-Ransome's Words Set Me Free: The Story of Young Frederick Douglass as part of their Personal Narrative Unit. To enhance their understanding of storytelling and the writing process, the author will explore Douglass’ journey as a young boy learning to read-despite it being illegal-and how it led to his empowerment and eventual freedom. With help from volunteer coaches, students will edit a draft of their own stories in the form of flash memoirs, short narrative pieces about a time they overcame a challenge or obstacle. Their work will be published in a book that includes their art.
