  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.

No experience or training is necessary to volunteer as a writing, research or art coach. You'll support, engage, and encourage students as they work on their projects in the classroom.

This workshop needs your support at an elementary school in Ft. Greene, Brooklyn. To sign up, contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code. We'll supply the school address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:

PROGRAM 463SF-R

Date: Tuesday, November 21st, 2017
Time: 9:30 - 11:00 AM
Volunteer Role: Writing Coach

About the workshop: Third-graders read Who Was Frida Kahlo? by Sarah Fabiny to learn about this celebrated Mexican artist, and explore how aspects of her life are reflected in her work. They’ll study Kahlo’s depictions of traditional Mexican dress, indigenous artifacts, and natural elements, as well as traditional items such as masks, clothing, and jewelry. Writing coaches will help them polish the final draft of their essays comparing and contrasting their own self-portraits with one of Kahlo’s. *Spanish speakers greatly appreciated!
