Our Cooking Matters team is hosting an Event Day at the Texarkana Walmart (400 New Boston Rd.) on November 9 th, 2017.
Cooking Matters at the Store Event Days are a way for the Cooking Matters team and volunteers to provide nutrition education to a large number of people in a relatively short amount of time. Events are planned and hosted in stores that are located in areas of high food insecurity. We look at Map the Meal Gap to determine the town and possible impacts of an event day. In selecting the store, we use local free and reduced lunch data to be as close as possible to the community members that want and need nutrition education.
Event Days take a participant about 20 to 30 minutes to complete. As a participant enters the store, they receive a 'Passport’ with 4 sections on it. They are led through the grocery store and visit 4 'stations’: 1.) Produce 2.) Protein & Dairy 3.) Grains and 4.) $10 Challenge. After they visit each of the stations and learn the target nutrition principles (identifying whole grains by reading ingredient lists, using nutrition labels, comparing unit prices to find the best deals), participants complete a quick survey and receive a $10 gift card to practice their new skills and purchase items they learned about on the tour.
Volunteers are needed for either half day shifts (8:45am -- 11:30am; or 11:15am -- 2pm) or full-day shifts (8:45am-2pm.) Volunteers will be responsible for teaching participants about how to cook and shop healthy on a budget. A brief, one-hour online training session must be completed before the event day. Lunch will be provided courtesy of the Alliance for all those who choose to volunteer with us. I have attached a document with detailed instructions for volunteers, for those who may be interested.

Description
The Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance, established in 2004, is a non-profit umbrella organization representing a network of Feeding America food banks and hunger relief organizations around the state. We work with local and national non-profit organizations as well as state and federal agencies in implementing programs designed to increase access to food and teach low income Arkansans the skills they need to make healthy food choices. We are also active in helping shape policy decisions impacting hunger in our state and in raising awareness of the educational, economic and social consequences of hunger.
The impact of our work has gained local and national recognition. The Alliance was named one of the three top non-profits by AY Magazine, a finalist for 2015 Arkansas Business Non-profit of the Year and Runner-up for Best Local Charity and Best Local Charity Event in the Arkansas Times Best of Arkansas 2014 reader survey. The Alliance was cited in the National Commission on Hunger’s final report to the US Congress for our innovative approaches to reducing hunger.
