Discouraged by the state of world affairs? Wish you could do something to help affect positive change? American Councils is seeking volunteers to evaluate scholarship applications of high school students from 23 countries in Europe and Eurasia. If you are interested in contributing to cross-cultural communication and understanding and want to learn about these cultures and countries through the eyes of their young people, this opportunity is for you. American Councils also offers the opportunity to evaluate applications from U.S. students to spend a year abroad immersing themselves in critical languages.

The U.S. Department of State-funded FLEX, YES, and NSLI-Y programs provide high school students with the opportunity to travel to the U.S. or abroad for an academic year or summer where they live with a host family and attend school. To date, more than 36,000 students have received scholarships to participate in the FLEX and YES programs and more than 5,600 students have received NSLI-Y scholarships to study abroad.

Volunteers must participate in a 1.5 day training session to prepare them to evaluate student applications. Subsequently, hours are flexible. Evaluation of applications begins November 2017 and will be completed by March 2018.
