Title: Parks Captain Volunteer

Number of volunteers needed: 4

Part Time: Maximum of 5 hours per week. This opportunity is flexible - from one day per month to 10 days per month

Location: We are looking for a representative at Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park, Marvin Gaye Park, Oxon Run Park, and Walter Pierce Park

Main Responsibilities:

  • Patrol the park weekly to access various needs and report back to WPP staff
  • Work with Parks & People staff members to schedule and plan upcoming volunteer days, and to oversee the volunteer site(s)
  • Greet the volunteers upon their arrival and ensure they have the information and tools they need to do their job
  • Guide groups of volunteers through the work they need to perform out at the parks (invasive removal, cleaning-up, tree planting...)
  • Collect all the documents the volunteers need to sign (waivers, image release forms...) and return these to Parks & People in an organized and timely manner
  • Supervise the volunteer group to ensure all responsibilities are being carried out
  • Lead efforts to get volunteers to collaborate on a regular basis and attract new volunteers
  • Provide information to volunteers on other ways to engage with WPP, including membership
  • Report back to Parks & People staff, including feedback and suggestions for improving the volunteer program

Required and Desired skills:

  • Background and interest in working with volunteers
  • Ability to work in a collaborative way with a small staff
  • Must be able to multitask, problem solve, thrive in a dynamic work environment, and enjoy working with a variety of people
  • Resourceful, flexible, and a self starter
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Passionate about the mission of Parks & People and the ThinkOutside! campaign
