Cayenne Wellness Center and Children's Foundation is the umbrella organization of MACHAO Orphanage, and dedicated to improving the health of communities, with a focus on advocating for individuals with sickle cell disease. We hold support groups, educate, engage, and work towards finding a cure for sickle cell disease with organizations across California. Last year, we held the 9th Annual Sickle Cell Disease Educational Seminar in Fresno, and it was one of our largest and most successful seminars yet. This year we are taking our activism to Sacramento and that's where you come in.

We are seeking a socially aware, politically engaged intern to help us orchestrate our 2018 Capitol Hill Day. This is a chance for you to become a part of a grass-root movement to make California politicians aware of the struggles and challenges faced by the sickle cell disease community due to systemic neglect from the medical system. Your job will take place in two parts. First, in order to have a successful Capitol HIll Day in Sacramento, you will be responsible for organizing local district meetings throughout California. Major cities and counties from San Diego, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Antelope Valley, Bakersfield, Fresno, Oakland, San Francisco and of course Sacramento. These district meetings will need to take place between January - April, 2018. Second, once the district meetings have been organized, you will be responsible for securing meetings with same politicians in Sacramento for Thursday, September 6, 2018 from 10 am - 12 pm. Third, you will also be responsible for the rally that will take place before our scheduled meetings. The rally begins at 9:30 am on the steps of the capitol. Overall, we plan to spend a day visiting offices, speaking with representatives and officials, and discussing with the media our push for effective legislation to address this neglect.

Job Requirements:

  1. 15 hours weekly, this can be done remotely but we ask that you come into the office once a week
  2. Calling, writing, sitting, and speaking for 2 - 3 hours at a time
  3. Drafting press announcements, scheduling press releases
  4. Communicating with media organizations, both radios and newspapers to get press releases scheduled
  5. Tracking calendar dates and keeping deadlines organized
  6. Communicating with and organizing sickle cell warriors who plan to represent their community at Capitol Hill Day and at the district meetings
  7. Ability to lift boxes of paper or materials

From you:

  1. Entry-level community organizer, local government/policy, communications, or marketing major
  2. Professionalism, in all forms of communication both over the phone and in writing
  3. Basic writing skills

Mission Statement

"MACHAO" is an acronym for MAkueni Christian Home for Assisting Orphans. The mission of MACHAO is to assist the destitute children, whose parents have been victims of death, namely HIV/AIDs. MACHAO focuses on providing these orphans with basic requirements such as: food, shelter, clothing and schooling facilities. The future vision of MACHAO is to expand the home facilities to cater to the increasing number of orphans and impoverished children. The group was formed in 1996 by seven Christians of the Africa Inland Church within Wote Division in Makueni District. MACHAO is a non-profit organization both in Kenya and in the U.S.A. and appeals to well wishers to support the program.

Description

In July 2005, Dr. Carolyn Rowley was introduced to the orphanage via Greater Heights Baptist Church located in Los Angeles, California. Greater Heights Baptist Church supports the missionary efforts of Joseph Mutunga and his family. Dr. Mutunga is one of the seven initial supporters of MACHAO. After Dr. Rowley's first trip to the orphanage, an assessment was made as to the children's need. In March 2007, Dr. Rowley formed the Machao Orphanage Foundation (a non profit organization) dedicated to supporting the efforts of the seven supporters, and the needs of the orphaned and impoverished children. The Machao Orphanage Foundation is a non profit organization in both Kenya and the U.S.A. Funding will support: The construction, building and furnishing costs for the new facility which will house 80 children in the impoverished region of Makueni, Kenya. Utilities (i.e., firewood, charcoal, paraffin). A child's education. The children in the orphanage are required to attend school. Participating in our 'Love-a-Child' program will support the purchase of a child's uniform, tuition, fees, books, and school supplies. Toiletries, clothing and medical supplies. Personnel. Currently, MACHAO has one house mother (matron) and a watchman. As the number of children grow, the orphanage will need at least one more matron and another watchman. Construction of a water system. Today, the Machao Orphanage Foundation continues to raise awareness and money for the new orphan facility and educational support.
