Volunteer/Intern Position: Legal Intern
Department: Department of Legal Services
SUMMARY
Legal Interns provide broad support to YWCA Pierce County’s paralegal. An internship in this capacity allows individuals to learn basic skills in office keeping, legal correspondence and the organization of documentation while carrying out the YWCA’s mission.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Upholds confidentiality laws and standards in accordance with WAC 388-61A, Chapter 70.123 RCW.
- Creating and organizing confidential files
- File correspondence
- Printing documents, making copies and helping organize hard-copy information
- Faxing pertinent information to appropriate locations
- Navigating courthouse websites and databases for the retrieval of legal documents
- Helping paralegals as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Passion for individuals, families and community members affected by domestic violence
- Excellent time management skills; detail orientated, organized and efficiency in repetitive tasks
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to follow directives and apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions given by the Legal Program staff.
- Capable of basic computer and internet use; must complete test prior to placement
- Understanding of how to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a diverse team of staff and volunteers
- Demonstrated commitment to the mission, vision and values of the YWCA Pierce County
QUALIFICATIONS
- Acceptable Washington State Patrol Criminal History Record
- Must be 18 years or older
- Attend the YWCA’s Domestic Violence 101 Training
- No prior legal or paralegal experience required
COMMITMENT
4 hours once a week; day and time of shift to be determined at start date. Must be willing to make a 3 month commitment.

Support from community members via volunteers and donations helps the YWCA Pierce County support our clients in creating lives free of violence, and able to thrive.
