The St. Louis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers partners with the NewPOT Solutions Charitable Foundation to bring the annual Our Mississippi Summer Camp opportunity for 6th-8th grade students in the underserved St. Louis region. In its third year, the program aims to engage students in STEM education with a focus on the Mississippi River - the national treasure in their backyards. Participating students and volunteers will be introduced to the role that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plays in the management of public lands, the outdoor recreation opportunities in their region, and the potential careers that exist with the Corps and other STEM organizations. Students will develop their STEM skills through the completion of a final project and will develop community ownership though clean ups and beautification projects in their community.
We are seeking volunteers interested in mentoring these young minds and helping them to succeed in their future endeavors. The camp runs Mon-Fri from June 4th-22nd. Volunteers can sign up for the entire camp as a full-time mentor or can sign up for select days as a visiting councilor. A mandatory training for all volunteers will be held in May 2018. For more information, contact Roxane Krutsinger, Natural Resource Specialist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at roxane.b.krutsinger@usace.army.mil or by phone at (314) 331-8624.
