Official Mark

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide support for competitive academic debate programs in the Minneapolis and Saint Paul school districts, in partnership with charters and suburban schools across the metro. We host regular debate tournaments year round. Looking for volunteers to judge debate rounds in-person.

What if there was an after school activity for students that encouraged self-confidence, improved academic performance, and boosted high school readiness while providing students with a platform to speak their minds? We think debate does all of these things, but we need your help to support debate programs at schools in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Volunteer as a debate judge and help students maximize their potential.

Debate judges watch debate rounds and evaluate teams based on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. They pick the winner and provide important feedback that helps our debaters improve their skills and grow in the activity. It’s a flexible volunteer opportunity to support youth education, civic engagement, and empowerment.

* We also provide judge training before each shift

Responsibilities:

  • listen attentively as students present their arguments during the debate round
  • as an educator, provide constructive and compassionate feedback to help students improve their debate skills

By Volunteering you will save the league hundreds of dollars in judging fees and provide an invaluable service to the community, allowing us to support more students and for that we couldn't thank you enough.

WE need your support! Volunteers like you make the work of the MNUDL possible.
...
The high school debate season is in fall/winter, Middle school begins in January (shifts tbd), with Spanish and Somali debate in late spring. We have a full year of volunteer opportunities for you!
