Mission Statement
The Elementary Institute of Science (EIS) is a premiere science enrichment program, which nurtures the intellectual curiosity of San Diego's young people by providing "hands-on" experiences to stimulate an ongoing appreciation and understanding of science and technology.
Description
The Elementary Institute of Science ( EIS) was founded in 1964 by an elementary school teacher, Tom Watts, who wanted to offer a different way of teaching science to the underserved multicultural mix of studentsin his South East San Diego neighborhood. Since its founding over 40 years ago, EIS has grown dramatically. In 2002, EIS moved into it's current 15,000 square foot state-of-the-art learning center on the corner of Market and 51st Streets. EIS provides science enrichment programs to children ages 7-13 in the fields of science, health, and technology. Our curriculum utilizes a hands-on and "minds-on" learning approach with small classes in a variety of science subjects including biology, chemistry, computer science, technology, engineering, geology, physics, astronomy, and photography. Our inovative facilty has a science library, a 92 seat lecture theater, and a community conference room Currently, EIS is able to provide after-school, weekend, and summer programs for more than 700 students per year.
