ORGANIZATION: Super Stars Literacy

Super Stars Literacy is a nonprofit literacy organization in Oakland, CA. We work with students from kindergarten to 2nd grade in under resourced communities. We provide our schools with day time intervention and an after school program. Our after school program runs generally from 2:30 pm to 6 pm. We in total provide students involved with Super Stars Literacy with an extra 22 hours of literacy support.

This year we are located at 6 different school sites in Oakland, CA. They are as follows

Martin Luther King Elementary
Think College Now Elementary
Garfield Elementary
Bridges Academy at Melrose Elementary
Aspire Monarch Academy
Brookfield Elementary

We are currently looking for volunteers for all of our school sites! We work around school and work schedules. Our tutors are able to come any day of the week between 4 pm and 6 pm. We typically like our volunteers to make a commitment of at least one hour a week, for four months, but we are very flexible.

This is a great opportunity to work with children and to help give back to a community. Also, this is a great way to fulfill high school or college volunteering requirements.

Mission Statement

When a child learns to read, they are empowered to transform their future.

Description

Because 3rd grade reading ability is such a strong predictor of high school graduation rates, Super Stars Literacy partners with schools in low-income communities to provide at-risk K-2nd grade students with comprehensive literacy intervention programming, helping them build the literacy and social skills that are the foundation for future learning. The SSL program consists of 1) daily after-school literacy and social-emotional skill developmet, 2) in-school reading support coordinated with the students' school-day teachers, and 3) family engagement activities designed to help parents support their child's reading development and connect families to the school.

We schedule one-time, team-building group volunteering activities as well! Please reach out to volunteer@superstarsliteracy.org for more information!
