Project HEAL has an exciting volunteer opportunity for individuals living in Essex County, MA! We are seeking 12-16 volunteers in Essex County who are interested in becoming facilitators of an evidence-based eating disorder prevention program and body acceptance class known as the Body Project.
the Body Project is a dissonance-based body-acceptance intervention designed to help high school and college-age women resist sociocultural pressures to conform to the thin-ideal (aka: "appearance-ideal"; terms are interchangeable in the context of this intervention) and reduce their pursuit of thinness. A reduction in thin-ideal internalization should result in improved body satisfaction and improved mood, reduced use of unhealthy weight-control behaviors, and decreased binge eating and other eating disorder symptoms.
Requirements/eligibility:
-Complete 1-2 day Body Project facilitator training in Essex County (July 2018 training in Peabody, MA; 2019 specific location/date TBD) provided to selected applicants by Project HEAL at no cost to volunteers
-Can commit to facilitating this 4-week course (1 hour per week) at 1-2 local high schools during the 2018-2019 academic year in Essex County, MA
-Must complete online Project HEAL facilitator application and subsequent interview process provided via Project HEAL, if selected after the application has been reviewed
-Complete basic criminal background check (no cost to the volunteer applicant; required to facilitate program within a school)
-Personal history of an eating disorder not required but is preferred

Project HEAL is a 501(c)3 non- profit organization that provides access to healing for all people with eating disorders.
Description
Since its founding in 2008, Project HEAL has provided over 100 applicants with access to live-saving treatment for their eating disorder, established over 30 Chapters and 25 Ambassadors bringing Project HEAL's mission and values to communities across the United States, and developed partnerships with more than 30 recognized eating disorder treatment providers across the US. The primary function of Chapters is to serve as robust local recovery communities that offer resources for those affected by eating disorders and opportunities to volunteer and make a difference in the lives of those affected by eating disorders.
We are an organization with a large volunteer base and have many volunteer opportunities available year-round. We are always looking for new people who have an interest in and passion for helping others suffering from eating disorders, poor body image, and low self-esteem.
