U.S. Dream Academy

Our program seeks talented, experienced tutors in all subject areas for students between grades 2 and 8. Our program reaches students seriously falling behind in school, and they spend four afterschool hours per week focusing on academics. Most students also spend time with our Educational Specialist at least once per week to focus on literacy.

However, many of our students would also benefit from 1 on 1 or small group instruction from a dedicated, weekly tutor (1hr/week). Under the direction of our Education Specialist, these tutors will be matched with a student most in need.

Tutors work with individual students one-on-one, though you may work with a small group of students, depending on the need.

Volunteers in this role should:

  • have patience and open mindedness to work with students with varying needs
  • an accessible and flexible style that inspires trust and confidence
  • willingness to learn and take direction
  • Ability to communicate with a student openly and non-judgmentally
  • Strong listening skills
  • Ability to establish a relationship based on equal responsibility and respect
  • Interest in needs and concerns of children who are at risk of incarceration because they are falling behind in school or have a parent currently incarcerated
  • Practical problem-solving skills and ability to suggest options and alternatives
  • Sensitivity to persons of different educational, economic, cultural or racial backgrounds.

About U.S. Dream Academy

Location:

8807 Colesville Road, 5th Fl, Silver Spring, MD 20910, US

Mission Statement

The mission of U.S. Dream Academy is to inspire and invest in the lives of children of incarcerated parents and families in communities harmed by systemic inequities by providing them with academic, social, and values enrichment through supportive mentoring and tutoring.

Description

The U.S. Dream Academy is an after-school program that aims to break the cycle of incarceration by giving children the skills and vision necessary to lead productive and fulfilling lives. Since its inception in 1998, U.S. Dream Academy has served over 11,000 students in 10 cities nationwide. U.S. Dream Academy's model combines strong academic-support with one-to-one and group mentoring in a community-based after-school setting. We have recently expanded our model to also provide virtual mentoring, where students and mentors meet via a secure, online platform. We’re not looking for superheroes - just everyday, awesome people like YOU, from the community, who want to help empower children to reach their full potential.
