EVENT DESCRIPTION:

Debate tournaments are the centerpiece of the After-School Debate League and hundreds of judges are needed to ensure that every round occurs. Tournaments take place on Fridays and Saturdays during the season which runs from October through March. You will join many debate devotees, including students, coaches, mentors, volunteers, and the BDL staff. Once you arrive, you will be greeted at a registration table with people who will be happy to walk you through your first tournament experience.

WHAT WE'LL BE DOING:

Judging is a one-of-a-kind opportunity that represents the Boston Debate League’s greatest volunteer need. No experience is necessary. We will train you in a short session right before the tournament you attend or we can come to your office and train you and your co-workers. As a judge, you will be asked to listen to debaters, take notes, offer encouragement, and determine a winner. Students eagerly anticipate and welcome judge feedback because they know it helps them become better debaters. Tournament weekends are broken down in to four to six hour shifts to make volunteering with the Boston Debate League accessible, whether you can join us for just a couple of rounds or for a full day. You indicate your time and location preferences in advance of the tournament through the electronic registration process. We ask that you commit to volunteer a few weeks before the tournament so we can be sure all of the debate rounds are staffed.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

Required pre-event survey: after using this web page to RSVP as a One Brick Boston volunteer, please visit this link to fill out a required pre-event survey from the Boston Debate League.

NOTE: This event is wheelchair accessible and is able to accommodate volunteers with disabilities. If you require any accommodations, please let the event manager know, so we can work with the nonprofit hosting the event to make necessary accommodations. Thank you!

WHERE TO MEET:

The event will be held at Brighton High School, located at 25 Warren St in Brighton. The school is near the Warren Street stop on the MBTA Green Line "B" Branch and the No. 57 bus line (Stop Cambridge Street@Sparhawk). The EM will contact you as the event draws closer with more information about the meeting location.

BOSTON DEBATE LEAGUE: The Boston Debate League brings together an active community of students, teachers, administrators, and community leaders devoted to improving the education and life skills of disadvantaged urban youth in Boston.

Mission Statement

One Brick provides support to local non-profit and community organizations by creating a unique, social and flexible volunteer environment for those interested in making a concrete difference in the community. We enable people to get involved, have an impact and have fun, without the requirements of individual long-term commitments.

Description

Headquartered in San Francisco, California, One Brick is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that brings volunteers together to support other local non-profits by adopting an innovative twist to the volunteer experience: we create a friendly and social atmosphere around volunteering, and after each volunteer event -- which typically lasts only 3 to 4 hours -- we invite volunteers to gather at a local restaurant or caf where they can get to know one another in a relaxed social setting.

Our 'commitment-free volunteering' allows you to choose when you volunteer, rather than having to make commitments for a certain number of volunteer hours, or agree to be available every week at a specific time.
