VITA - Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
What is VITA? VITA is an IRS-supported, free income tax preparation program for qualifying families throughout the Pikes Peak region. VITA volunteers help families complete and submit tax forms, apply for Earned Income Tax Credit, and begin a path toward financial stability.

Who are VITA Volunteers?

  • Certified Public Accountants
  • Accountant of Finance Professionals
  • Students Studying Accounting
  • Experienced individuals who prepare their own taxes
  • Anyone with a little to no tax experience who is WILLING to learn

You can help in SIX great ways!
  • Schedulers
    • Take calls in our 211 Call Center to schedule VITA appointments.
  • Greeters
    • Welcome taxpayers & oversee sign-in.
    • Ensure families are directed to correct areas.
  • Intake Specialist
    • Ensure that the taxpayer has necessary information and documentation required to complete tax return.
    • Explain the VITA packet to each taxpayer; assist them in completing information.
  • Tax Preparers
    • Participate in IRS tax training and complete certification.
    • Prepare simple tax returns.
    • Discuss the tax return with the taxpayer after the quality review process is completed.
  • Interpreters
    • Provide free interpretation and translation services to customers who are not fluent in English or may need assistance.
    • Complete training for interpreters.
  • Quality Reviewers
    • Individuals who have volunteered 50+ hours with VITA or who have tax preparation experience who can:
      • Check completed tax forms for errors.
      • Circulate among tax preparation team to provide support and answer questions.
      • Participate in IRS tax training and complete advanced level certification.

There's training that will be provided (dates to be announced) and online training that is self-paced, preparing you to become a certified I.R.S. tax preparer. Support is provided by qualified mentors who will assist volunteers as needed.

Time Commitment: In order to be a VITA volunteer, you must be able to donate at least four (4) horus of your time per week during the tax season - January 15 through April 30, 2018.

Opportunities are available at six tax sites (pending confirmation) in El Paso County, during the day and evenings.
