Family legal matters can be overwhelming for many, particularly those experiencing poverty. Student or Community Volunteers are needed to assist attorneys and the court by being the point of contact for walk-in clients at the Courthouse Assistance Project (CHAP), which is the Volunteer Lawyers Project’s family law clinic. CHAP Legal Intake volunteers interview clients to determine initial eligibility, establish the primary questions to be addressed with the attorneys, and assist with the completion of certain court forms. The CHAP clinic runs at the West Bath Court House on Wednesdays from 12:30-4. Volunteers are the direct link between the client and the attorney and learn valuable information on topics such as legal processes, family law, as well as issues related to poverty and domestic violence in Maine.
