Brooklyn For Peace

Our long-time volunteer is retiring, so Brooklyn For Peace, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, is seeking a person with a background in bookkeeping and accounting willing to commit to volunteering time on a regular basis to maintain our financial records. The volunteer will typically spend six hours per week in our office in downtown Brooklyn, but should be able to commit to spending additional time during our fundraising drive and gala in late fall/early winter, and during tax-filing season. Offsetting this, all of July and August can be vacation time.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Track income through contributions and sales of fund-raising items.
  • Make deposits, issue checks (upon approval by Chair), maintain payroll records for 1 to 2 employees, reconcile bank statements and credit card transactions.
  • Prepare monthly and end of year financial reports for the Board, showing year-to-date figures against budget projections.
  • Prepare and submit quarterly NYS and federal payroll report, annual NYS Sales Tax, and annual federal W-2, W-3, 1096,and 1099.
  • Prepare a draft budget for Board approval.

Qualifications:

  • Must have thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles. Experience with not-for-profit organizations and reporting requirements a plus.
  • Must have at least two years’ experience in QuickBooks software and a good working knowledge of Excel. Familiarity with PowerBase constituent relationship management software a plus.

In response to the militarism of U.S. and its impact on the lives of people around the world, Brooklyn For Peace organizes community meetings and forums, sets up information tables, participates in phone, email and petition campaigns, meets with elected officials and participates in demonstrations.

We are a democratically functioning non-partisan group which provides opportunities for Brooklyn residents to work for peace and social justice in ways that can accommodate busy schedules. We believe, when given the right tools, ordinary people will change the world.
