ORGANIZATION: L.A. Works

Maxine Waters Employment Prep Center

Program Description:
Volunteer for 2 hours a week (or more) to help us manage the enrollment centers where adult learners can receive a free app to improve their reading skills. With 35 million people in this country who read at a 3rd grade level or below, only 2 million are able to receive any type of educational service. This initiative is designed to reach learners by overcoming obstacles to basic literacy through the distribution of free phone apps.

Volunteer with XPRIZE and help improve adult literacy in Los Angeles for many families!

Volunteer Role & Responsibilities: You can help adults looking to better their lives by volunteering for the roles below:

SIGN IN/OUT- Sign people in and out.
INTAKE- Welcoming participants and downloading two apps on their smart phones to onboard them into the program.

No experience is necessary, only a love of learning is required! Each volunteer is matched to a position and meet to help administer baseline tests at an adult school or public library. Volunteers can receive meals (depending upon shift), and support from a dedicated Regional Coordinator.

Time Commitment: 2+ hours each week, time to be determined by your schedule. Volunteers must commit to entire shifts.

Requirements: Must register on LAWorks.com and/or enrolled in RSVP. Completion of a short video training.

Parking & Transportation: Parking will be dependent upon your testing location; transportation needs to be provided by volunteer.

Benefits: Our volunteers say that this experience is the highlight of their week. Having an opportunity to give a person the tools to learn to read and grow personally is very rewarding. You will be contributing to your community and meeting other volunteers.
